Access Justice Now, a 501c3 non-profit corporation, was established February 18, 2008 by Marquette County law enforcement, legal and victim service professionals, as well as victims of intimate violence. AJN, as the non-profit is commonly referred to, is dedicated to providing safety, services and support to victims of intimate violence. Intimate violence is any violence occurring within an intimate relationship, or violence used in an intimate way.
As its first official act, Access Justice Now created the Victim Voice Award to acknowledge and honor those people whose actions give voice to intimate violence victims. AJN is pleased to announce the inaugural 2009 Victim Voice Award will be presented to Alger County Prosecutor Karen Bahrman Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the Women’s Federated Club House.
Ms. Bahrman, as a career prosecutor, truly exemplifies the qualities envisioned by the Victim’s Voice Award. She has given voice to numerous intimate violence victims during her impressive prosecutorial career in Marquette, Delta, and Alger counties. No single incident exemplifies this more than the tragic death of Ms. Juanita Culver Richardson, who was killed in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park on June 22, 2006.
Ms. Bahrman, as the lone prosecutor of Alger County, successfully overcame significant legal, forensic, social, and geographical challenges to provide a vibrant voice for one unable to speak for herself. It is Ms. Bahrman’s dedication, professionalism, and perseverance that embodies the essence the Victim’s Voice Award and makes her the deserving recipient of the inaugural award.
